Any day is Tiswas day

A look at Tiswas compilations that have been officially released on videotape and DVD. This is just a work in progress at the moment...

Tiswas : Comedy Capers

The third and final Tiswas videotape compilation, and it's a bit of a twist. Old school comedians in this era had been enjoying a revival on video releases now that regular television had sidelined them, so the inlay to this beauty takes the angle of being a selection of classic comedians' routines that just happened to be on Tiswas. The actual content is a lot like this, but still close to the previous two compilations, containing sketches and the usual staple content of Compost Corner and Lenny's newsflashes. Bernard Manning fans will be disappointed that he doesn't make his trademark blue jokes on this, and most of the comedy in his scenes come from the Tiswas team themselves.

Before the opening titles begin, we get a pre-titles sketch, in the spirit of Python. This is Lenny as Arthur, King of The Britons (hmm, inspired by a HTV show that aired shortly before Tiswas in the ATV region?). He sees the sword Excalibur poking out of a lake, but on the end of it, is not some moistened bint or a watery tart, but Chris Tarrant, who's fed up, and wants to go home and watch Tiswas. Fair enough.

Compost Corner: The one with Genesis, or rather, just Phil Collins and Mike Rutherford. Chris and Lenny (as David Bewwamy) are on hand as usual. A politically incorrect gag at a wheel-chair-bound character in Crossroads (Sandy) is cracked by Lenny (flower is supposed to resemble Sandy, Lenny says let's 'wheel it out then'). Also, Phil yelps out 'I, I, I' (to the tune of Genesis' latest single Turn It On Again) when prodded by Mr Bewwamy. A great gag in this is the Margaret Thatcher flower, which is standing by a measuring stick, which is numbered one to ten. David describes it as growing really fast, 'but when it reaches Number Ten it goes all loopy'! Politcal satire on the 'Was, eh? What did the Tory-supporting Phil Collins make of this?

Frank Carson, Dave Prowse, Big Daddy and Bernard Manning try out a 'Speak Your Weight' Machine. It complains at most of them with some predictable gags, but the best is the final one. Bernard gets on it, and it bellows out 'ONE AT A TIME PLEASE' repeatedly, then explodes. This is the explosion seen in the compilation/series 7 opening titles. At the time, Bernard had gone under a heart operation a week before, and had no clue this was going to happen.

A Party Political Broadcast, or rather Sylveste McCoy sitting behind a shell of a television set, acting as a snooty patronising MP (I should have just said 'MP' really) for the Tiswas party. Chris and Sally are viewers, and they're not too impressed, so they soak him. The Phantom finishes him off with a pie sandwich.

A split-screen effect sketch, giving us two Chris Tarrants, one tidy, one messy, but it's not the one from the previous compilation. This time it's just general dialogue with a few gags thrown in, finishing off with a gunging for one of 'em.

Frank tries to make the Tiswas team and the other guest laugh. Bernard Manning, Bob Carolgees, Sally James, Chris Tarrant, John Gorman and Lenny Henry are sitting on chairs trying very hard not to laugh as Frank giggles and makes childish noises, which gives a few grins, and eventually, the whole team do laugh. This is actually very funny, but definitely one of those things you have to see rather than reading a printed description like this.

From either 1977 or 1978, this is Chris Tarrant using Trevor East and Sally James as hand-operated puppets. This gives Chris the opportunity to do a pseudo-ventroloquist act, using pre-recording speech.

Ooh, a clip from the final series! These are rare in the compilations! Having edited out Fogwell Flax' introduction (these Tiswas compilations like to go for a Stalinist style airbrushing of history, sticking with Chris, Sally, Bob, Lenny and John - maybe a bit of Trevor East or Den Hegarty if you're lucky), we see the Police 5 spoof with guest Shaw Taylor, doing this spot entirely on his own. He's looking for missing tarts belonging to the Queen of Hearts. They do appear, leading to a pie-in-the-face finish for this sketch.

Chris Tarrant meets strongman Tony Bruce, who has boasted being able to pick up two men at once. So Chris gets him to pick up Bernard Manning and Big Daddy, which is practically impossible, as we'll see.

From 21st March '81, this is guest Michael Palin, doing an excellent comic monologue. It's appeal for a campaign - S.L.O.P. - Save Lots Of Plankton. This is really worthy of Monty Python itself, it's their style and of course, it's written and performed by one of them!

Frank Carson is the subject of a This Is Your Life spoof, from this series 6 show. This starts at some way into the scene, presumably the previous bits couldn't be cleared or something! Chris is there as Eamonn Andrew, with comic 'relatives' being played by Sally James, Paul Hardin and some kids...

Newsflash from Trevor MacDoughnut (Lenny Henry), doing a frog-in-my-throat gag, the usual splash, and then the camera pans onto a scruffy John Gorman wandering by the cage, asking imprisoned guest John Peel if could spare a bite to eat.

Compost Corner, and it appears to be from series 6. The flowers this time are one-hit-wonders The Knack, something that's gone unnoticed in the credits. Chris and Lenny do their thang.

Frank Carson shows guest Johnny Briggs (him off Corrie) doing a record for drinking a yard of ale. Sort of. You see, this is Tiswas, supposed to be a children's show, and the pubs aren't even open yet anyway, so Frank has taken the wise precaution of not using any beer whatsoever - the viewers have to use their imagination!

This is purely a Max Boyce monologue, played from one of his audio recordings (probably an LP, stand-up comedy used to be popular on vinyl back in the day). The jokes are about school days. To accompany this audio performance, the studio is set like a classroom, John Gorman is a teacher, and the pupils are Max Boyce, Bob Carolgees, Clive Webb, Matthew Butler (in his rabbit suit!) and Lenny Henry.

All taken in good humour, I must add! These days you can still make this joke, only that Ricky Gervais has to write it, and add 30 minutes of guilt around it so you can laugh.

Phantom Flan Flinger Challenge: Houdi Elbow vs The Pretenders - more staged questions leading up to Chrissie Hynde and her band being totally flanned and saturated by the Phantom and his family. Albert Grumble is there to issue the rebukes at the end!

Closing credits are played, and unlike the two previous compilations, this is simply silent - no pop video from the Bucketeers here. Just white text scrolling on a black background. Even more disappointingly is there's no end caption promising another compilation. Ah well... It will be 11 years before the next release - out on DVD in 2005...

Random Tiswas quote:
"Some of it was bad because of the innate sexism there: the Benny Hill-type humour didn't sit right with an anarchic, pro-rock 'n' roll show." - Lenny Henry on O.T.T., 1999.

Random Tiswas fact:
Bob Carolgees real name is Robert Johnson. He got the Carolgees bit from Carol and George - people he worked with during his mobile disco days.
