New member (Hello!) - Can anyone identify an episode I have

Postby sherlock on Mon Jun 20, 2005 2:23 pm

Hello there - first post here and, indeed, first time I've seen the site (well done to all concerned, BTW, fantastic job!)

I have an episode taped off air from a show that I attended the recording of - indeed, I actually have a speaking part in it, introducing a cartoon! Anyhoo, seeing as a lot of these things seem to have been lost forever, I was wondering if it is a common episode or one that people are unaware of.

It's a crystal clear copy on the original VHS tape my dad recorded it on. Gordon Astley presenting, which narrows it down to 1982. Guests are (from memory, haven't watched it for a while) Frank Carson, Fogwell Flax and Robert Plant (ex Led Zeppelin) amongst others. Den Hegarty joined the Sealed Knot for a re-enactment of the battle of Edge Hill and Gordon Astley got into a bit of trouble for swigging from a bottle of cough mixture! Kids - drugs kill ...

Sorry if this is a well known episode and i'm just regurgitating things people already know about - couldn't find it described in anyones trade lists though ...

Cheers,

Matt

Cheers! I only wish all my stuff wasn't in boxes, so I could get on with finishing more webpages...

Not necessarily. The Gordon Astley series began in September 1981.

Details of all of Gordon's appearances are at
http://www.tiswasonline.com/whos_who.php?person=astley

sherlock wrote:Guests are (from memory, haven't watched it for a while) Frank Carson, Fogwell Flax and Robert Plant (ex Led Zeppelin) amongst others.

Fogwell Flax was a regular presenter for this series, and his details are at:
http://www.tiswasonline.com/whos_who.php?person=flax

Frank Carson guested occasionally - he only did five shows for this series...
http://www.tiswasonline.com/whos_who.php?person=carson

Now, I know our EPISODE GUIDE isn't fully finished, but we've got the presenter data in, and it's 98-99% accurate...

Looking at the 1981-82 series, these are all the dates for shows that have Gordon Astley, Fogwell Flax AND Frank Carson in...
17th Oct 1981
28th Nov 1981
27th Mar 1982
3rd Apr 1982

You mention Robert Plant. At the moment, we have little info on non-presenters. We do have a LOT of 1981-82 recordings (thanks to staplingmachine), and I think I've got copies of most, if not all, of his recordings, and I have not seen Robert Plant in any of 'em, so it looks like you have something the TiswasOnline team don't have!

Don't worry about not having a date - our own Matthew Lewis has a recording of a show with him in it, playing a very prolific role in the show, and there was a debate as to which date it was. Lee and Matt believed it was 11/10/81, Staplingmachine believed it was 25/10/81. A lot of research went into looking at various things (like the Underates alphabet competition, examining the programmes in the TV Times adverts, etc), and it was found neither dates were right, it turned out to be 18/10/81!

Gordon did get in a bit of trouble now and again, he mentioned a few things to me when I met him a few weeks ago!

Well, it's not a well-known episode to me, but I'll let the rest of the team have a look, and indeed, it's open to any other forum viewer to comment upon. (If we're talking about common episodes, I think 19/11/81 is a good candidate - it's all over the place, despite being a weak episode.)

Just had confirmation from my Dad. It was the 17th October 1981. Lord knows how he found that out ...

Can anyone else confirm if this is currently circulating, or wether it's a previously 'lost' episode. If it is unique then i'll look into getting it transferred onto DVD for anyone who wants a copy ...

Cheers,

Matt.

BTW, it's got all the kids advert breaks complete as well! That's a nostalgia trip by itself!!

Hello, sherlock. First of all, welcome aboard. Hope you have a great time on the forum.

Secondly, I have about 11 episodes from the final series that I taped myself, plus about 9 or 10 taped by others, and NONE of them include that Robert Plant episode. So, yes, indeed you have a rare, lost, missing episode.

Happy to work out a trade!!! And if you do transfer to DVD, can you keep in all the adverts and any announcements before and after the show?

OK, I'll sort out getting a straight DVD transfer done.

For anyone that's interested, I just remembered, it's also got Cozy Powell that now sadly deceased drummer on it as a guest. Fogwell does the old 'Tea, Cozy?' gag several times, If I recall correctly ...

Wow, rock heaven. Robert Plant and Cozy Powell!

My second favourite group (behind Yes) is ELP. For a year or two in the mid-eighties, the P stood for Cozy Powell!

Hi, everybody - Sorry I've kept you waiting so long - holidays, deaths, births, new job and a whole host of other things that have so far made 2005 FAR more interesting than 2004 have taken my time up over the past few months and I apologise for leaving things up in the air.

The episode in question is currently still on VHS as I just have not had chance to chuck it into Boots and get it converted. Being technologically inept and having incredibly backward friends means that I am unable to do this myself but the men at the chemists have told me that they will do a top quality copy for a crisp ?20 note. I know some of you have been kind enough to offer to put it onto DVD for me but, and I say this with absolutley no offence intended, I just cannot take the risk with the only copy of a tape that means so much to me.

Anyways, the nice (and incredibly slow, if there turnaround time of 21(!) days is anything to go by) people in Boots will get the thing on Monday and I will, of course, let anyone who wants a copy have one. All that I ask is that I can have a copy of a different show from your own collections in return and that the episode is not hoarded from others in the future. I hope this practice does not happen here but, as a keen collector of Bootleg live CD's by various bands, I have many times in the past been offered 'rare' shows in return for extortionate amounts of other more common gigs or, in some cases, money. Sorry to harp on, but it's a pet hate of mine ...

I'll let you know once the DVD is back and can then run anyone who wants one off as soon as I get your e-mail.

Sorry again for the delay,

Matt.

PS - Yes, I will include all adverts, trails, announcements, etc. You will get an exact copy of my tape, essentially.

Having thought about it, I'm based in Gloucestershire and If anyone lives within reasonably close proximity and has a DVD recorder, I'm happy to pop over and transfer the thing with you. My rider consists of full fat coke, steak flavoured McCoys and chocolate mini rolls ... !

Hello Sherlock,

Many thanks for this! I live in Sheffield which is nowhere near Gloucestershire, and I also don't have a DVD-recorder, but rest assured that if I DID live near Gloucestershire and if I DID have a DVD-recorder you could have as much chocolate, crisps and Coke as you wanted.

I am part of a trading group for the band Yes and we also believe in not hoarding anything and freely sharing what's available.

Having said that, I do have a couple of DVDs of telly programmes in my collection where the trader has got hold of the material directly from an official archive or from someone in the industry. If the trader has requested that I don't pass this material on or put it on any of my lists, then I have to respect that and I always make a note on the DVD or CD. (But I agree that hoarding rare stuff just to make loads of dosh is just not cricket.)

Otherwise, let's share Tiswas. The show stays alive if people keep watching it...

17th October 1981 edition

Postby Blockbuster on Mon Sep 26, 2005 10:55 am

Hi

I've just joined here. I met Ollie Spencer a few weeks back at a birmingham nite spot (I recognised him from the Tiswas days). He gave me his mobile number because I told him that I'd got some video of Tiswas that I was thinking of getting transferred onto DVD. I'm currently collating all my clips (going back to 1979) and I said I'd give him a call when done.

Anyway, the episode with Robert and Cozy I'd always thought it was 10/10/81 but I could not be positive. I will go along with concensus on this and will mark it down as 17/10/81. Basically, I have the clips of Robert and Cozy which I recorded at the time, and they're much sought after in Led Zeppelin trading circles (me a huge fan of Zeppelin...RIP John Bonham, 25 years gone yesterday 25th Sept). Sherlock, is there any chance I could grab a copy of the full show from you on DVD?

Cheers

Going back to 1979

Postby Blockbuster on Tue Sep 27, 2005 5:39 am

I just have a short clip from '79. Most of the stuff I have is from 1981. Some help with dates would be welcome, here's some clues:-

1) Chris Tarrant's last show
2) edition featuring band 'Krokus'
3) edition featuring Roger Daltrey and Kenney Jones
4) edition featuring The Pretenders
5) Lenny Henry 'This is your Life' spoof
6) Hudi Elbow in disco...can't stop laughing outtakes
7) edition featuring 'Don't Go' promo video of Judas Priest
8) Intro featuring spoof 'World of Sport' sketch with Fred Dineage (immensly funny!)

That's all I can think of for now.
Cheers
